Night Out

This is more or less a review of Shallow Side’s show in Madison last Friday, but it is also a personal post. I’ve been absent from the local music scene for a while and it was absolutely wonderful being back.

Unfortunately, I missed most of the opening act, a band called By All Means. What I did see, however, was really good. If you like hard rock/heavy metal, you might want to check them out.

I have been to four or five Shallow Side shows previously. I always enjoy them. An energetic performance coupled with amazing originals–and some odd but very fun covers–makes for one hell of a night. Shallow Side is better than anyone at getting an audience on its feet, except perhaps Almost Kings.

Friday was no different. The band’s set included originals such as “Stand Up,” “Out of Reach,” and “My Addiction.” I have to admit, though, that one of my favorite parts was their version of Bruno Mars’s “Uptown Funk,” with which they concluded their show. Front man Eric Boatright definitely did the track justice. It was just…magnificent. 🙂

Happy Birthday to Me!

No, today is not my birthday. Monday was, but I wasn’t anywhere near a computer so I couldn’t blog about my absolutely amazing weekend!!!!!

Friday night, we went to see Jude Buckingham and Almost Kings. The performances were epic, as always, and Boze pulled me onstage during “Five Foot Hurricane.” Almost Kings did a few new songs (and premiered one over the club’s PA before their set) and let me just say that I already know I’m going to love the album. I didn’t get my usual post-show time with the guys because I had apparently partied a little too hard during…

Anyway, the following night, my friends threw me a little party at their house. We had breakfast for dinner–lemon poppy seed waffles, red velvet waffles, bacon, blackberry sauce, a tropical fruit compote, ham rolls, and a drink that consisted of watermelon and Malibu rum. My parents ate with us and stayed long enough to check out my gifts, then they went home and the rest of us watched lame horror movies until bedtime.

It was truly a fantastic weekend, filled with most of my favorite people, music, laughter, and love. I couldn’t have wished for a better celebration. 🙂

Another Night With [Almost] Royalty

By this point, y’all know how much I love Almost Kings and you’ve either checked them out or you haven’t. So this blog is simply going to be a lot of pictures, and a video, from this past weekend. 🙂 Enjoy!

Watch this video first. Trust me. It will change your life. Oh, and this one, too.

Music & Family

Music has always been a big thing in my family. Ever since I can remember, we’ve been going to shows together. I know for a fact that my parents took me to shows while I was still in a stroller, and I can clearly remember seeing Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for the first time…when I was six.

For years, my brother and I tagged along with Mom and Dad, watching classic rock acts of which they were fans. Now, however, we are much older and we have begun carrying our parents to shows. Well, our mom, at any rate. Dad isn’t very sociable anymore.

I am a huge fan of local acts, as everyone who follows this blog has surely realized. I hang out at shows so much that I’m recognized by bands, staff at the venues, etc. I made it my mission to introduce my mom to that world (she didn’t frequent the local scene when she was younger). I was most insistent that she attend a Lynam show with me, for they are the band that I am closest to. She has now seen them four or five times, and she adores vocalist/guitarist Jacob Bunton almost as much as I do.

Anyway, a little over a week ago, she and I hit a Lynam show. My brother joined us after work. I had the best time with two of my family members there. Jacob even gave my mom a shout-out from the stage.

And now, pictures!

These Self-Proclaimed Princes

Last Thursday, I went to see Almost Kings in Madison. Insert everything I’ve ever said about them into this post and you will be able to almost imagine how epic my night was.

I will never get over this band. I’m impressed by the fact that these four men give 200% at every show, both on and off the stage. They are the kindest, most wonderful and talented people, and I hope they know how much happiness they have brought to my life. Seriously, I can’t say it enough: if you ever have a chance to see them, take it! You won’t regret it!

These Pictures Makes Me Smile

Yeah…that’s Jacob Lynam. I realized I hadn’t previously mentioned this show, which happened back in October. I don’t think there’s much to say about it, though, because this picture explains without words how the night went.

Oh, wait, and then there’s this one:

That totally earns another heart.

I guess I created this post for no other reason than to make up for not blogging last week.
