Underrated Horror Gems

Hey, y’all! I’m back with another horror movie post. (The joys of spooky season!) This time, I’m going to list a few films that I think are criminally underappreciated. So here we go!

1. Last Shift (2014)

The thing you have to understand is, I’m not really that freaked out by supernatural horror. Ghosts, demons, possession, etc., doesn’t scare me. In a ghost hunting group, I’d be the resident skeptic. A movie about such things has to be extremely well-crafted to ensnare my attention. But this movie was just so…creepy. The tension built throughout and was perfectly done.

You might not agree that it’s underrated, considering it was remade in 2023. Actually, Malum is considered an “expanded reimagining.” I, however, still believe that Last Shift has not been given its due.

2. Urban Legend (1998)

This movie was released amidst all the other teen slasher flicks of the late 90’s, and somehow it was overlooked. I am a huge Scream fan – only the original in 1996, though – but I have to say that Urban Legend was much more creative. Don’t get me wrong: the motive for the murders was still a little lame, yet the way they were carried out made sense and was pretty cool. Plus, there was some star power, the film featuring Jared Leto, Tara Reid, Danielle Harris, Rebecca Gayheart, Joshua Jackson, and Robert Englund.

3. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

This movie has gained some traction since its release, but when I first watched it, it was still flying under the radar. Everything about this film is uncomfortable and makes the watcher uneasy. It is well-paced and never boring, and the parallels drawn between Alzheimer’s/dementia and demonic possession are both heartbreaking and terrifying.

4. Hell House LLC (2015)

Thanks to a couple of really well-done sequels that helped bring attention back to the first one, Hell House LLC has gained cult status. It’s another tense, atmospheric film that makes the nerves crawl (especially that damn clown mannequin).

5. Amusement (2008)

I found this DVD in the $5 bin at Walmart. My best friend and I have a tradition of sorts in which we bring random ass horror movies to each other and watch them together. This one sounded moderately interesting, so I bought it and took it to her house – and we were pleasantly surprised.

Amusement is about revenge, plain and simple. It follows three childhood friends and their encounters with a former classmate, finally tying it all together before the final showdown. And again, there’s a scary ass clown doll 😂

6. The Houses October Built, 1 & 2 (2014, 2017)

I love found footage horror, as if you couldn’t tell from this list, and both of these films check my boxes. The idea of weird shit happening in haunted attractions with no one being any the wiser makes perfect sense and is actually a rather horrifying thought. Plus, there’s a lot of footage from real haunts and it’s just cool.

7. Cry Wolf (2005)

A game of deception getting out of hand and ending with people dead, all because of one little prep school brat? Sign me up! I loved this film, but I feel that it too was overshadowed by the continuing saga of Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

8. Unfriended (2014)

This, and its follow-up Unfriended: Dark Web, are both heavy on the suspense. The first is supernatural, the second not so much, but I adore them equally and never really see people talking about them.

***

I could probably go on and on and give y’all a top 10 or 15, but I’ll stop here. If you’re reading this and have any movies you’d like to add, let me know! Maybe you’ll recommend my next watch!

My Favorite Found Footage Horror Movies

Behind slasher flicks like Scream, the found footage subgenre of horror is probably my favorite. Despite its weak start – I was not a fan of The Blair Witch Project, which was the first of these films I remember gaining any traction – this genre has grown into something really fun. So, here are a few found footage movies I would definitely recommend watching.

The Houses October Built (2014)

The Houses October Built 2 (2017)

Hell House LLC (2015)

Hell House LLC II: The Abaddon Hotel (2018)

The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

I don’t normally enjoy possession movies, but The Taking of Deborah Logan is legitimately scary.

Unfriended (2014)

Unfriended: Dark Web (2018)

This is the one of the few sequels I liked more than the first.

Death of a Vlogger (2019)

The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan (2018)

The Den (2013)

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021)

I have hated every Paranormal Activity movie – until this one. I was hesitant to watch it, but my BFF and her husband wanted to when I visited last Halloween. And I really enjoyed it.

Weekly Focus: Songs About Halloween, Day Four

Happy Halloween!!!!!

Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross — “Halloween Spooks,” from the album Elvira Presents: Haunted Hits (1988).

I was first introduced to this song when my best friends and I watched The Houses October Built. The earliest mention of it that I could find was from the Elvira Presents collection in 1988.

I’ve been talking about this for weeks and last night, my two best friends and I got together and recorded the first episode of Horror Chats! Our topic was favorite horror films and subgenres. It’s a little awkward, but I feel like it offers a glimpse into where we’re each coming from.

We’re already discussing our next topic, so head on over and subscribe to my channel! Episode two will be up fairly soon, I hope!

And by the way, if you subscribe to me, I’ll likely subscribe to you. I believe in supporting the community I want to be a part of.

Must-Watch Horror Movies

Horror is an interesting genre because there are so many facets. Fear, whether rational or not, is a personal experience. I feel that this gives the writers, directors, etc., of horror films a lot of room in which to play. There are movies I don’t find remotely creepy that scare my friends, and vice versa. So naturally, this list is very subjective.

1. Halloween — (The original one. Rob Zombie’s remake was atrocious.) How can you not love this movie? I watch it every year.

2. Halloween II — They should have stopped with this one. But come on. Trapped in a hospital, unable to fully function because you’re on meds, and people are gradually disappearing around you…

3. Saw — Judge me if you must, I didn’t sleep after I watched it the first time.

4. Scream — Yes, it’s terrible, in a way. Still, it started a string of movies that everyone close to my age watched.

5. Urban Legend — The least lame of those particular slasher films. The premise was actually legitimate. So underrated.

6. The Houses October Built — A mockumentary. Haunted houses, clowns, and a stripper joint where the dancers wear monster masks. Two thumbs up.

7. The Den — Okay, this one bothered me more than it should have. It had that realistic edge, the multiple events that made me say “That could really happen.” I was tense throughout.

8. Fright Night — Again, the original. Not that I don’t love Anton Yelchin, but Chris Sarandon may literally be the sexiest vampire in the history of ever. When he dances with Amanda Bearse in the club… Rawr!

9. Lights Out — It wasn’t exactly scary. However, it was very well done.

10. The Final Girls — In my opinion, not technically a horror film despite being classified as “horror” and “comedy”. With that being said, I adored this movie. It was SO good. Funny and full of feeling, as well as all the 80’s slasher flick staples, this is a must-have in your collection.

I would give The Funhouse Massacre honorable mention. Another movie that embraces the comedic value of horror films, it toed the line of cheesiness rather admirably, without ever crossing into full-on lame. The killers and their methods actually earned a shiver or two.

And that’s it! Most of these can be found on Netflix or Hulu, I believe. And Showtime has been running The Funhouse Massacre into the ground. Pop some popcorn, grab a blanket, and turn off the lights… It’s time to get spooky!
