Hey! It’s been a hot minute since I did one of these posts, but trust me, it’s not because I can’t think of places I want to go.
I’m still focusing on locations in the contiguous United States. There is so much to see here that it would probably take the rest of my lifetime to visit all the locations I’m interested in.
This post is dedicated to the Great Salt Lake in northern Utah. I probably should have mentioned this as a travel destination when my brother and sister-in-law still lived in Colorado. I bet we could have planned a trip.
A few quick facts about Great Salt Lake:
- Largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere
- A remnant of Lake Bonneville, a prehistoric body of water that covered much of Utah
- The 8th largest terminal lake (within a “sink” with no evident outlet) in the world
- It is easier to float in the lake due to its high salinity – the water is saltier than seawater.
- Parts of the lake turn pink due to specific types of bacteria that reside there.
- Boasts a work of land art by Robert Smithson. This piece is 1500 feet long and comprised of mud, salt crystals, and basalt rocks.
The best way to visit Great Salt Lake is via Antelope Island State Park. The island itself is the largest island in the lake, spanning roughly 28,000 acres, and is protected as a state park. There is quite a bit of wildlife, such as American bison and bighorn sheep, as well as hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. One can also take a tour of the Fielding Garr Historic Ranch House, the oldest Anglo-built structure in Utah still on its original foundation.
