My 2025 Goodreads Reading Challenge

Hey, y’all! It’s time to start my annual reading challenge via Goodreads. If you’re new here, let me tell you now: I love books. I am a certified bibliophile. And each year, I set a reading goal on Goodreads – a goal I typically break and reset at least twice.

This year, my goal as of today is only 50 books. But there’s a reason for this. I have decided to have a theme for my book choices in 2025. I saw a list of 100 classics everyone should read, and I wrote down those that I have never read. That number was 36. (Before you think I’m exceptionally well-read, be aware that the list included the “complete works of William Shakespeare,” then also included some of those works individually, just to hit their goal of 100, I guess.)

So, I have 36 classics to read, and I’m giving myself 14 books of my choosing. This should be fun!

I am currently reading The Bell Jar (Sylvia Plath), Twas the Knife Before Christmas (Jacqueline Frost), and Horror Movie (Paul Tremblay). I have also started The Murder of Sleepy Hollow, the fifth book in the Charlie Kingsley series by Michele Pariza Wacek, but it’s more of a read-for-a-few-minutes-before-bed kind of thing.

If any of you are fellow readers, recommend some books! Or tell me your favorite read of 2024!

Goodbye 2024, Hello 2025

It’s day one of a new year, and while I am not known for preaching positivity, I will say that we all have a chance to make 2025 great.

I don’t know how y’all fared in 2024, but it wasn’t such a terrible year for me. I got to see and meet Danny Worsnop (Asking Alexandria/We Are Harlot) with my mom, and she amused him so much that he told a story about her on Facebook. My dad took me to the Marilyn Manson/Five Finger Death Punch tour for my birthday. I have been a fan of Manson for almost 25 years, and it was my first time seeing him. As an added bonus, The Funeral Portrait opened the night (and they were phenomenal). And while we’re on the subject of concerts, I finally made it to the promised land: one of my best friends took me to see Creed for Christmas! I missed them during their heyday – I was, like, 10 – and that always depressed me. I was so excited about their reunion, and they were worth waiting for. Mammoth WVH and 3 Doors Down were the openers, and both bands kicked ass!

On a personal note, my best friend moved back to Alabama! I had missed her and her family terribly. I gained self-confidence this year. My friends and coworkers helped immensely with that challenge. I like myself better at 37 than I did at 17.

The negatives for 2024 were huge, I will admit. We lost my paternal grandmother in October. She was my last grandparent, the one I spent the most time with and knew the best, so when I say that it’s been a struggle… More than my own grief, I’ve been very concerned about my dad. It’s only been two years since his youngest brother passed. Now it’s just him and my uncle Chris. If you could spare a thought for them, that would be lovely.

I’m also stuck in a job that doesn’t make me happy, but I plan on changing that as soon as possible. I guess that’s a minor complaint overall, though it does impact me almost daily. Still, I’m thinking positive! I will find something better in 2025!

Happy New Year to all my readers/followers! I hope this January 1st finds you well. Drop me a comment and tell me a good thing about your 2024, or tell me what you’re looking forward to in 2025.

Here are a few pictures from the past 12 months.

My Top 50 Songs of 2024

I didn’t even pretend I was going to do less than 50 songs for this list. There was no way. And y’all made it difficult to narrow it down to even that! I’m gonna end up with a top 100 if I’m not careful.

So, this is totally subjective, of course. There were tons of amazing releases over the past 12 months, and I tried to share them all (though I know I missed a few, or found them too late). But these are the tracks, in no particular order, that grabbed and held my attention without letting go.

View the full playlist HERE.

Note: One band/artist cannot have more than one song included. I tried not to put anything by major label bands/artists on here. Last but not least, no covers!

The Mostly Music 2024 Playlist, Pt. 6 (Updated 12/30/24)

This is the last update of 2024! I can’t believe this year is already coming to an end. It seems like just yesterday I was adding the first few songs to part one of the playlist. I hope my posts helped y’all find your new favorite song(s).

Pt. 1Pt. 2Pt. 3Pt. 4Pt. 5Pt. 6

Get ready for my top 50 of 2024, which will be posted tomorrow!

Here are the releases that have been added to the playlist since December 22nd.

Albums Released July to December 2024

Be sure to visit the list of albums from January to June 2024 as well!

Note: My focus is on the indie scene. If you don’t see an album here that dropped this year, please let me know!!!

EPs Released July to December 2024

Here is a list of EPs released during the second half of 2024. (Be sure to check out the January to June compilation here.)

Please remember that my focus is on the indie community! And, as stated in the first post, I have likely missed a few, so if there’s anything y’all don’t see, let me know. I will be doing a separate blog for full-length albums that have dropped in the same time frame.
